Freedom of Information and Expression

Freedom of Information and Expression

The Open Society Justice Initiative promotes freedom of information and freedom of expression as quintessential rights in an open society, with particular concern for their exercise by marginalized groups. Freedom of information (FOI) enables citizen participation in decision-making by governments and international bodies, promotes accountability to the public, and underpins efforts to combat corruption. Freedom of expression (FOE) is a prerequisite for the protection of democracy and other human rights. The Justice Initiative focuses on the defense of political expression through the mass media and other means. Throughout its programming in this area, the Justice Initiative works closely with the Soros foundations network, including national foundations, the Network Media Program and Information Program. We also work in partnership with many national and international NGOs and academic institutions.
