Fellows Program for Angola and Mozambique

Fellows Program for Angola and Mozambique

OSISA/Justice Initiative Fellows Program for Angola and Mozambique

This program is designed to support the development of human rights skills and consciousness among young lawyers in Angola and Mozambique, two countries recently emerged from periods of prolonged civil war and authoritarian rule.

Young lawyers from these Lusophone countries, nominated by NGOs where they work, pursue a program of study and practical work experience in human rights/public interest advocacy.

For the first eight months of the Program, Fellows will reside in Brazil and will complete a four-month one-semester non-degree course of study at University of San Paulo and a four-month internship in a non-governmental organization based in San Paulo.

The overarching goal of this program is to build legal capacity and strengthen human rights culture in Angola and Mozambique by providing young lawyers with the incentives, training, resources, and job opportunities needed to pursue full-time careers in public interest and/or human rights law. It aims to nourish expanding human rights networks in both countries in their efforts to use law as a tool to promote and defend human rights. Finally, the program seeks to contribute to the development of a regional human rights legal network across language boundaries in southern Africa.

This innovative program is an initiative of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Open Society Justice Initiative, in collaboration with Conectas Human Rights, Open Society Foundation (South Africa) and South African, Mozambican and Angolan Civic organizations.
