Joint Statement on Pretrial Detention in Africa

Sixteen civil society organisations, including the Open Society Justice Initiative, have submitted a joint statement on the costs and impact of excessive pretrial detention to the 50th session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The statement calls on the ACHPR to establish a set of standards for national police and justice agencies' use of police and pretrial detention that will both guide their work, and provide a framework for assessment.
